Skincare Beauty Devices – Do They Really Work? Part 2
■ Home Derma Roller (Microneedle)
Conclusion: May have drug delivery effects

Home derma roller = Microneedle devices = MTS (Micro Needling System)
Microneedles come in various structures and lengths, but their mechanisms can largely be divided into two types.

-
Creating micro-injuries to stimulate skin regeneration
-
Applying active ingredients to deliver them into the dermis layer
On average, the epidermis of the face is about 0.2 mm thick. To reach the dermis, a needle length of at least 1 mm is required.
Additionally, to effectively deliver substances into the skin, a length longer than 0.2 mm is necessary.
However, home-use microneedle devices are legally limited to a maximum of 0.25 mm.
Therefore, while they may be used for drug delivery, they are not suitable for scar treatment.
■ Home-use Ultrasound / Radiofrequency Devices
Conclusion: Potentially effective

Radiofrequency (RF) uses electrical currents to heat the skin from the epidermis down to the dermis, promoting collagen production.
If the dermis can be heated to over 42°C for at least 10 minutes, collagen regeneration can be expected.
For this reason, home-use RF and ultrasound (sono) devices may also assist in transdermal drug delivery.
■ Home-use HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) Devices
Conclusion: Not effective

HIFU = High Intensity Focused Ultrasound
Unlike radiofrequency (RF), HIFU uses high-intensity focused ultrasound waves to precisely contract the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer, producing a lifting effect.
Originally, this powerful technology was developed for medical purposes, such as cancer treatment, due to its ability to generate strong energy.
However, home-use HIFU devices are restricted in design for safety reasons and cannot generate high temperatures.
Therefore, true lifting effects or fat reduction—like those achieved with clinical HIFU devices—cannot be expected from home-use models.

【3-Line Summary】
-
Home-use MTS devices are too short for scar treatment but may be effective for drug delivery purposes.
-
Home-use RF/sono devices may be effective for drug absorption and collagen regeneration.
-
Home-use HIFU devices cannot generate sufficient power, so no significant effect can be expected.
That concludes our information on home-use beauty devices and skincare at home.
