This time, we'll take a look at the removal and precautions for

skin tags, syringomas, flat warts, and milia

common bumps that can appear under the eyes, on the face, or even all over the body.

They all look quite similar, so how can we tell them apart?

Small lesions can sometimes be difficult to distinguish with the naked eye.

Each type of lesion has its own characteristic appearance, so a magnifying device is often used for accurate diagnosis.

However, in reality, since the removal methods are almost the same (except for milia), precise identification is not always necessary.

If you notice small bumps on your face or body and are concerned,
do not try to squeeze or remove them yourself — be sure to see a dermatologist for proper treatment.

(Flat warts, in particular, are contagious and should never be touched.)

How to Identify and Understand Flat Warts

그림1.png

Flat warts typically appear as skin-colored, flat, plate-like lesions.

The most important point is that they are caused by a virus,
which means they can easily recur and spread to other areas of the body.

Because patients with flat warts are more prone to side effects,
it's crucial to avoid certain procedures that may worsen the condition.

For example, treatments that involve repeatedly puncturing the face with needles should be avoided.

This is because a needle that has pierced a flat wart may carry the virus and spread it if used again on healthy skin.

(This includes skin boosters like Rejuran or Juvelook, needle-based RF treatments like Potenza, and procedures like MTS.)

※ Fortunately, the removal process for flat warts is relatively simple.

How to Identify and Understand Skin Tags

The characteristics of skin tags are quite simple.

They protrude from the skin, as seen in photos, and come in various colors—such as skin-toned, brown, or even black.

Skin tags rarely recur and can be easily removed by simply cutting them off,
making them one of the easiest lesions to treat.

How to Identify and Understand Syringomas

Syringomas are most commonly found under the eyes.

At first glance, they may look similar to flat warts or milia,
but under magnification, they appear round with a glossy surface, as if something is inside.

They vary in size—some are small, while others may merge together to form larger lesions.

However, removing syringomas is quite difficult.

This is because syringomas are histologically an abnormal proliferation of sweat glands and are located deep within the dermis.

As a result, attempting to remove them completely in a single session will almost always leave scarring.

Therefore, syringoma removal is not a procedure that can be performed just anywhere.

How to Identify and Understand Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Sebaceous hyperplasia is also relatively easy to identify,
with its most distinctive feature being a central depression in the lesion.

The color is usually skin-toned but can appear slightly yellowish,
which reflects its nature—a condition caused by overgrowth of the sebaceous glands, as the name suggests.

Like syringomas, these lesions are also located deep within the skin,
but treatment is generally easier compared to syringomas.

Characteristics and Treatment of Milia

그림3.jpg

Milia are easy to distinguish due to their characteristic round shape and small white keratin-filled bumps.

The removal process is also simple—a tiny opening is made in the skin, and the white material is gently extracted.

Can all of these be treated? What about recurrence?

Easier to treat: Flat warts, milia, skin tags
More difficult to treat: Syringomas, sebaceous hyperplasia

Flat warts, milia, and skin tags—since they are easier to remove—
can usually be eliminated in a single session with over 90% effectiveness,
and they rarely come back.

Syringomas and sebaceous hyperplasia are considered more difficult to treat for two main reasons:

First, they tend to recur easily, and second, their roots lie deep within the skin,
which means attempting to remove them completely in one session can leave significant scarring.

Therefore, treatment for syringomas and sebaceous hyperplasia should be performed by a skilled and experienced practitioner.

Can I just go to any clinic? What should I be careful about?

Note: Possible side effects include redness, pigmentation, and discoloration.

Since milia, flat warts, and skin tags are relatively easy to treat,
we recommend prioritizing affordability when choosing a clinic for these concerns.

However, if you have syringomas or sebaceous hyperplasia under the eyes,
we strongly recommend checking the clinic’s equipment and treatment options in advance,
as improper treatment can result in visible scarring.

Although these types of lesions (including moles) can be treated using CO2 lasers,
when it comes to deeper-rooted or larger lesions—such as syringomas or sebaceous hyperplasia under the eyes—
erbium lasers or Agnes RF devices are more appropriate.

※ Removal using CO2 laser is not recommended in such cases.

In Summary (3 Key Points):

  1. These skin conditions often look and behave similarly, but you should never try to squeeze or touch them yourself.

  2. Shallow moles, skin tags, flat warts, and milia can be removed with over 90% success in just one session. Look for clinics with reasonable prices.

  3. Deeper moles, syringomas, and sebaceous hyperplasia require advanced equipment and experienced practitioners for safe and effective treatment.

This has been a comprehensive guide on syringomas, skin tags, flat warts, and milia.
